The Building
The Spotty Dog Books & Ale resides in The former home of the C.H. Evans Hook & Ladder, which resided at the firehouse from 1890 until late 2003. The C.H. Evans fire company is actually much older, tracing its origin back to December 7th, 1799. This building is one of several neighborhood firehouses in Hudson whose company members were recently consolidated to a brand new location on Glenwood Avenue in Hudson. The hook and ladder company--and the building--is named after Cornelius Henry Evans I, mayor of Hudson from 1872 to 1880. C.H. Evans I also owned the original C.H. Evans Brewing Company in Hudson.

Wherever possible, we tried to retain the original character and charm of the building. The ceiling of the main room is original to the firehouse, and is 116 years old. The main room served as the parking bay for the fire vehicle, necessitating over 20 steel columns under the floor to support the weight. The stairway, though closed to the general public, leads to the second floor: a beautiful period room untouched for many decades that served as the firemen's meeting place, gaming room and cigar lounge.

We’re honored and delighted to bring this historic tradition back to Hudson, so sit back, read, drink, and be a part of our ongoing history!
